When it debuted in early May 2014, The Coastal Passage was Rocky Mountaineer’s fifth journey. The tourist rail company also operated a standalone one-day Whistler Sea to Sky Climb route journey for many years. That journey was blended into the Rainforest to Gold Rush itinerary (Vancouver-Whistler- Quesnel-Jasper) in 2016.A spokesperson for Rocky Mountaineer told LATTE that departures on the company’s only trans-border rail itinerary, The Coastal Passage, had been axed next year “due to less than expected interest in the route”.“As of next season, we will focus on our three most popular routes: First Passage to the West, Journey Through the Clouds and Rainforest to Gold Rush, which are the routes that travel between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies,” Rocky Mountaineer’s Director of Communications, Nicole Ford explained to LATTE.The remainder of the 2019 Coastal Passage Route departures are scheduled to operate as normal.Go back to the enewsletter Go back to the enewsletterThe core rail itinerary of the Coastal Passage RouteCanada’s Rocky Mountaineer is abandoning its rail service operating between Seattle and Vancouver in 2020 due to lack-lustre patronage, LATTE can exclusively reveal. The route has been sold for the past five years in a combination of itineraries, ranging from three to 14 days.Acting as the core rail element of the Coastal Passage Route, the journey was available to guests in both SilverLeaf Service and the luxurious GoldLeaf Service. The trip dovetailed with Inside Passage cruises that were operated by partners to and from Seattle.
